# Chapter 2: Password Protection

## **Chapter 2: Password Protection**

To protect the software against unauthorized configuration changes, an additional password has to be supplied for the GUI to launch. When starting the GUI for the first time, a self-defined password is requested. See [Set initial password.](/administration-guide/chapter-4-configuration.md#set-initial-password)

* The password defined in the local GUI is also the password for the core components.
* To prevent brute-force password attacks, a delay is used in GUI and CLI startup if too many incorrect passwords have been entered.

**A password is required to:**

* [Start the GUI](/administration-guide/chapter-4-configuration.md#start-the-gui)
* [Update BlockyforVeeam®](/administration-guide/chapter-3-installation.md#updating)
* [Uninstall of BlockyforVeeam®](/administration-guide/chapter-3-installation.md#uninstallation)
* Eject and detach a volume

Any eject or detach request for a volume must be confirmed with the password while the GUI is running. After confirming the volume, it will be detached or ejected.

* When updating or uninstalling BlockyforVeeam®, a password is only required if the core is installed.
